CLASSES OFFERED AT AACS:

This year we will be offering a variety of new after school classes taught by Rocks and Robots on Mondays 3:30-5:00. The session is 6 week long classes.

BORG: Grades 3-8th

BORG is our version of Frankenstein's monster. Using CD Rom disk drives, screwdrivers, pliers, glue and of course LEGO we will build motorized cars and creations. In dismantling computer CD Rom drives key components such as motors, gears and mechanisms will be salvaged. The LEGO parts will be used to enhance and individualize your mechtronic creations. Students can learn about circuits, switches, electric motors, gear ratios and torque. With this knowledge the students build, cars, catapults, claws and more. They keep all that they build.

Robotics with LEGO Mindstorms: Grades 3-6

Using the LEGO Mindstorms NXT robot kits, students will become familiar with the fundamentals of computer programming. Using a powerful icon based, drag and drop computer language that is easy to learn for many different types of learners. Students use this language to combine basic elements called icons (analogues to functions and subroutines) including motion control and sensor icons to build programming that exhibit "intelligent" behavior. Students will program their robots to follow multi-step programs to drive in different patterns. They will also integrate sensors into their programs so that their robots can interact with their surroundings.

Ultrasonic (using echo location) and light sensors give the robot “vision” capability. These “vision” sensors enable your robot to detect, avoid or seek objects as well as to measure distance, light level and to detect movements. The touch sensor gives their robots a sense of touch, by detecting when it is being pressed by something and when it is released again. Finally, the sound sensor enables the robot to respond to sounds like alarm signals, voice commands and even quiet.

All of these sensors along with individualized challenges teach students to think outside the box, challenge their minds and prepare them for the world of technology.

Sumo ZONE: Grades 6-8

In Sumo ZONE students build robots that will face the challenge of the ZONE (a silver target in the middle of the ring). The robots must stay in the ring like in traditional but also occupy the ZONE before their opponent can. Students face each other on a square table. A bottle covered with white paper is placed on the center of the zone and the location of the zone is unknown prior to the start of the game. To win this challenge, students must remove the bottle and occupy the ZONE for three seconds while their opponent tries to do the same thing. The challenge is not only in building but in the skill of the programmer.
