Flutterbot/Rocks & Ropes (ages 13-17)

Flutterbot

Maze and Line navigation are events at many national and international robotics competitions. The founder of Rocks and Robots, George Albercook PhD. (Dr. G to his students), designed a robot called the Flutterbot, a competition level award-winning robot. In 2005 Flutterbots won first and third in the Canadian Robotic Games. In 2006 they won second and third. In 2007 a Flutterbot won first place in the firefighting competition. The Flutterbot has been featured in Robot magazine. Campers in this session will build and program a Flutterbot robot. Campers may choose to keep the robot for a reduced price of $174 (a savings of $76). The Flutterbot was designed specifically as a teaching robot, and students need no previous knowledge of electronics, robotics or computer programming. Campers will learn how to read schematics, use prototype breadboards and program in the powerful language C (the operating systems UNIX and LINIX that run the world wide web are written in C.) Through a series of increasingly complex programming challenges, campers progress from simple commands to the ability to write sophisticated programs. Once they leave camp they are ready to compete at the international level!

Rocks & Ropes

The 'Rocks' portion of Rocks and Robots is half of each day. Using the philosophy of “challenge by choice,” students work in groups on each of the various activities and challenges. Campers go rock climbing twice a week do a satellite assisted scavenger hunt with GPS receivers, learn map and compass skills and tests themselves on an orienteering group challenge. In addition, we take campers to a ropes course experience. The high ropes course is 25ft or more above the ground. All campers are secured safely to the course cabling. Older (going into sixth grade and up) campers have the full high ropes experience. Younger campers challenge themselves with an exciting zip line ride.
