Electric Circuits/Rocks & Ropes (ages 9-11)
Electric Circuits
Through a series of hands-on challenges campers discover the components of electric circuits. Campers investigate the inside of a light bulb and build their own flashlight (that they keep). They will also build and keep their own working electric generators and motors. We cover series and parallel circuits switches and schematic symbols. With this knowledge the campers design and wire an "electric clubhouse". This clubhouse is made out of cardboard and is huge! It is bigger that a small bedroom and will hold all of the campers in the class.
Rocks and Ropes
The "Rocks" portion of Rocks and Robots is half of each day. Using the philosophy of “challenge by choice,” students work in groups on each of the various activities and challenges. Campers go rock climbing twice a week do a satellite assisted scavenger hunt with GPS receivers, learn map and compass skills and tests themselves on an orienteering group challenge. In addition, we take campers to a ropes course experience. The high ropes course is 25ft or more above the ground. All campers are secured safely to the course cabling. Older (going into sixth grade and up) campers have the full high ropes experience. Younger campers challenge themselves with an exciting zip line ride.
